  HipHop

HipHop

with Theshay

This class teaches rhythm, musicality, coordination, and age-appropriate hip hop choreography with no suggestive music/movement.  This is an excellent class for high-energy kids who want to take a fast and fun dance class.

Hip hop dancing is an urban ethnic dance form that has gained popularity in recent days. It is more common than the break dance of modern days. Hip hop dancing marked its beginning as part of the hip hop culture in the early 1900's, when the youth in and around Bronx, New York started dancing on the streets.

Hip hop dancing is an ideal way to express one's creativeness. It features self impressions and the dances come from the soul. The dancing represents body movements that go with the beat and rhythm of hip hop music. There is breaking, popping, locking, and free styling in hip hop dances. The jumps, breakages, and rotations in the movements are combined in such a way that the dance style becomes an informal and explosive one.

  Salsa

Salsa

with Mario (Tuesdays) or with Danella (Saturdays)

Originally evolving from the 1960s Mambo era when Cuban music was introduced to New York, the New York Salsa has its own evolutionary path as old Mambo is fused with New York jazz and swing to create a new salsa genre. The dance is strictly On 2... "On 2" timing emphasizes the conga drum's tumbao pattern, and encourages the dancer to listen to percussive elements of the music.

Salsa has been taught in ballroom schools throughout the world since the 1950s, when the music came direct from Cuba. New York style tends to place a greater emphasis on performing "shines" where dancers separate and dance solo for a time, a practice which originates from Swing and New York tap.

The music for this class is mid-to-up-tempo salsa with an emphasis on percussion and band orchestration rather than the vocals. Come on out for a class today!

Tango Evolution: Close Embrace

In this Intermediate class, we focus on advanced concepts while always keeping a sharp focus on embrace, musicality and navigation. The moves that we teach in this class will be simple, musical and elegant. We will focus on different tango orchestras as well as vals and milonga and give you specific tools and moves to interpret these in an interesting and satisfying way. We will try to always spend time focusing on the followers role in the dance.

You do not need a partner to take our classes. We switch partners during the class and make sure that everyone gets plenty of dance time.

We recommend that everyone wear closed-toe shoes that fit your feet comfortably and snugly, preferably with leather bottoms that allow you to pivot easily.
